India’s sports economy has reached a historic milestone, crossing the $2 billion mark for the first time in 2025. According to a report by WPP, the sector recorded a strong 13 per cent growth, signalling a clear shift from an emerging market to a more mature and structured sporting ecosystem. At the heart of this transformation remains the ever-dominant Indian Premier League, which continues to drive commercial momentum.

A major chunk of this growth has been fuelled by sports advertising, which saw a sharp rise of nearly 20 per cent, touching ₹9,571 crore. This segment alone accounted for over half of the industry’s total share, underlining the increasing value brands place on sports visibility. Meanwhile, sponsorship revenues also grew steadily, climbing 7 per cent to ₹7,943 crore, accounting for around 42 per cent of the overall market.

To put things in perspective, the industry has almost doubled in size over the last few years. From ₹9,530 crore in 2021, it has surged to an impressive ₹18,864 crore in 2025. This consistent upward trajectory reflects growing audience engagement, stronger media rights deals, and increased corporate participation across sporting platforms.

Unsurprisingly, cricket continues to dominate the Indian sports economy. The sport alone contributed ₹16,704 crore, accounting for a staggering 95 per cent of media spending and 81 per cent of sponsorship revenues. The IPL, in particular, remains the biggest revenue generator, with sponsorship income alone exceeding ₹1,000 crore.

Digital media has also played a crucial role in this expansion. Digital advertisements now make up 51 per cent of total media spending, highlighting a shift in consumer behaviour. Additionally, athlete endorsements have grown by 10.3 per cent, reaching ₹1,350 crore, as brands increasingly invest in individual sporting icons.

Other sports have shown glimpses of growth, driven by events like the Neeraj Chopra Invitational and Lionel Messi’s India tour. However, the overall share of emerging sports declined due to scheduling gaps and fewer marquee events, reinforcing cricket’s unmatched dominance in India’s sporting landscape.
