The Delhi Capitals have taken a decisive call ahead of IPL 2026, confirming that KL Rahul will open the innings throughout the season. The announcement came during their pre-tournament press conference on March 23, with the management keen to address a major flaw from last year. Head coach Hemang Badani and director of cricket Venugopal Rao admitted that constant changes at the top order disrupted the team’s rhythm in IPL 2025.

Delhi used as many as seven different opening combinations, starting with Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk before repeatedly shuffling the lineup due to form issues. The instability had a direct impact on results. Without a settled opening pair, Delhi often struggled to build strong starts, leaving the middle order under pressure far too early in the innings. In a format where momentum is everything, those early setbacks proved costly.
“Over the last couple of years, opening partnerships have become extremely important in T20 cricket,” Hemang Badani said, highlighting the shift in approach. “We want to give KL Rahul a consistent run at the top this season,” he added, confirming the franchise’s long-term plan.

Rahul’s role has gradually evolved since joining Delhi. After being released by Lucknow Super Giants post-IPL 2024, he initially featured in the middle order before being pushed up the batting lineup. Now, the team is fully backing him as their primary opener.

The decision is also backed by Rahul’s improved form. In IPL 2025, he scored 539 runs at a strike rate of 150, showcasing a more aggressive approach compared to previous seasons. His renewed focus on power-hitting has added a new dimension to his game.

However, one key question remains—who will partner him at the top? Delhi still have multiple options, including Pathum Nissanka, Abishek Porel, and Prithvi Shaw. With Rahul’s role now clearly defined, Delhi Capitals will hope that stability at the top finally translates into consistent performances in IPL 2026.
