The leadership debate at the Mumbai Indians has taken centre stage ahead of IPL 2026, with former India captain Kris Srikkanth making a bold call. The ex-selector has urged Hardik Pandya to step aside as captain and hand over the reins to Suryakumar Yadav, who recently led India to a T20 World Cup triumph. Srikkanth’s remarks come at a time when the Mumbai Indians are looking to reset after two inconsistent seasons.

Hardik took over the captaincy in 2024 following his high-profile move from the Gujarat Titans, replacing franchise icon Rohit Sharma. While the decision was strategic, it did not sit well with a section of fans, especially after Rohit’s successful legacy with the five-time champions. The transition hasn’t been smooth on the field either. Mumbai endured a disappointing 2024 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table.

Although they bounced back to reach the playoffs in 2025, their journey ended in the Eliminator, raising further questions about leadership stability and team direction. Despite backing Hardik’s credentials as a capable leader, Srikkanth believes the timing might be right for a change. Speaking on his YouTube show, he pointed out that Suryakumar’s recent success as India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain puts him in a strong position to lead the franchise.

“It’s a unique situation,” Kris Srikkanth observed. “Suryakumar has just led India to a World Cup title, and Rohit did the same a couple of years ago. Hardik is a fantastic player and a proven captain, but from the outside, Surya looks like the obvious choice right now.”

He further suggested that the franchise management should address the situation collectively by involving key figures in the leadership group. According to him, a clear and unified decision could prevent any potential dressing-room tension.

Srikkanth also hinted that the best resolution might come from Hardik himself. If the current skipper voluntarily steps aside in favor of Suryakumar, it could strengthen team harmony and eliminate any speculation around internal rifts.

“It’s about the bigger picture,” he added. “If Hardik takes that call himself, it could settle everything within the group.”

As IPL 2026 approaches, the Mumbai Indians will be desperate to start strong—something that has eluded them in recent seasons. Slow starts have often derailed their campaigns, making early momentum crucial this time around.

While leadership remains under scrutiny, Rohit’s experience, Suryakumar’s form, and Hardik’s all-round value will all play key roles in shaping Mumbai’s season. For Rohit in particular, IPL 2026 holds added significance as he continues to push for consistency ahead of future international assignments.

Ultimately, whether the Mumbai Indians stick with Hardik or pivot to Suryakumar, the decision could define their campaign—and possibly their long-term direction—in one of the most competitive IPL seasons yet.
