In a landmark development for the Indian Premier League, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have reportedly been sold for a staggering USD 1.78 billion (approximately ₹16,706 crore). The franchise has been acquired by a powerful consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group, alongside Blackstone, Bolt Ventures, and The Times of India Group. This deal now stands as the biggest franchise sale in IPL history, surpassing the previous record held by the Rajasthan Royals.

The bidding process for RCB was fiercely competitive, attracting interest from multiple high-profile investors. Among them were a consortium led by Ranjan Pai, backed by global giants Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Temasek, and a joint bid involving EQT and Premji Invest. However, the Birla-led group eventually emerged as the frontrunner, consolidating its bid after initially exploring a move for the Rajasthan Royals.
As part of the new ownership structure, Aryaman Vikram Birla will assume the role of Chairman, while Satyan Gajwani has been appointed Vice Chairman. The leadership group also includes David Blitzer and Viral Patel, underscoring the consortium’s global reach.

Blitzer echoed similar sentiments, calling the IPL one of the most exciting growth stories in global sport and highlighting RCB’s massive fanbase as a key attraction.

The scale of this deal underlines the exponential growth of the IPL since its inception. Back in 2008, the franchise was originally purchased by Vijay Mallya for $111.6 million. The latest valuation represents an extraordinary surge of over 1,300 per cent, showcasing how the league has transformed into one of the most valuable sporting ecosystems worldwide.
Ownership of the franchise later transitioned to Diageo through its subsidiary United Spirits. Under this regime, RCB enjoyed a golden phase, clinching their maiden IPL title in 2025 and achieving significant success in the Women’s Premier League as well, led by stars like Smriti Mandhana.
