Kolkata Knight Riders have paid a historic tribute to one of their greatest-ever players, Andre Russell, by retiring his iconic jersey number 12 ahead of IPL 2026. The move cements Russell’s legacy as arguably the most impactful all-rounder in the franchise’s history and marks the end of an unforgettable playing chapter in the Indian Premier League.

After being released from the squad last season, Russell opted not to enter the auction and instead transitioned into a new role as KKR’s ‘Power Coach’. While it signalled the end of his playing career in the IPL, the franchise has ensured his legacy will live on — no future player will don the number 12 jersey.
Russell’s numbers underline his immense contribution. Across 140 matches for KKR, he scored 2,651 runs at a staggering strike rate of 174.17 and picked up 123 wickets. More importantly, he was instrumental in delivering two IPL titles for the franchise in 2014 and 2024. His ability to change games single-handedly with both bat and ball made him a fan favourite and a match-winner in every sense.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore highlighted the emotional connection behind the decision. He spoke about Russell’s long-standing association with the franchise, both professionally and personally, and described the jersey retirement as a fitting tribute to a player who defined an era for the Knight Riders.

An emotional Russell reflected on his journey, calling it a decade filled with unforgettable memories. He expressed gratitude for being part of two championship-winning sides and acknowledged the unique feeling of winning the IPL, describing it as different from any other achievement in cricket.

This gesture also aligns KKR with a growing tradition in the IPL. Mumbai Indians famously retired the number 10 jersey in honour of Sachin Tendulkar, while Rajasthan Royals retired number 23 to honour Shane Warne. Similarly, Royal Challengers Bengaluru honoured legends AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle by retiring their jersey numbers.
For KKR, retiring Russell’s number isn’t just symbolic — it’s a celebration of a player who redefined their identity in the IPL.
