As the spotlight shifts to IPL 2026, Rishabh Pant finds himself under growing pressure to rediscover his white-ball rhythm. The Lucknow Super Giants captain, once celebrated for his fearless approach, is now facing tough questions about consistency and shot selection. Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Pant’s biggest challenge lies in breaking free from the very identity that made him special.

Chopra didn’t hold back in his assessment. “The scrutiny around Rishabh Pant is justified. He is a prisoner of his own reputation for playing unorthodox shots,” he said. The former cricketer pointed out that Pant often refuses to slow things down, even when the situation demands composure. Instead, he continues to rely on risky strokes, which have frequently cost him his wicket at crucial moments.

Reflecting on Pant’s recent struggles, Aakash Chopra added, “Last season, despite opportunities to take time and rebuild his form, he continued to play risky shots, which drew criticism.”

The numbers back that argument. Rishabh Pant managed just 269 runs in 13 matches last season at an average of 24.45—far from what is expected from a player of his calibre.

Aakash Chopra also highlighted how Pant’s standing in India’s T20 setup has taken a hit. “Having been part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, he is now completely out of the conversation for the national side,” he noted.

With the team experimenting with different wicketkeeping options, Rishabh Pant’s place is no longer guaranteed. Interestingly, Pant’s unique approach has always divided opinions. Chopra recalled that even during his Test success, there were differences in perspective.

“Rahul bhai was not very happy with Pant’s batting approach,” he said, referring to former India head coach Rahul Dravid. Despite that, Pant’s ability to read the game differently has often set him apart.

There is, however, a positive development. Aakash Chopra revealed, “The most heartening thing for me is his acceptance that he needs to change something in his game.” Pant’s reported interaction with Yuvraj Singh is being seen as a step in the right direction.

As IPL 2026 approaches, Pant stands at a crucial crossroads. With leadership responsibilities on his shoulders and his international future at stake, this season could define the next phase of his career.
