A fresh controversy has erupted ahead of IPL 2026, with Yograj Singh taking strong exception to remarks made by Ravichandran Ashwin regarding Arjun Tendulkar’s chances at Lucknow Super Giants. The debate highlights the growing scrutiny young cricketers face, especially those carrying a famous surname.

Arjun, who recently moved from the Mumbai Indians to Lucknow in a trade deal involving Shardul Thakur, is still trying to establish himself in the IPL. In five matches so far, the left-arm pacer has picked up three wickets, but consistency has remained an issue, reflected in his average and economy rate.
During a discussion around LSG’s probable XI for IPL 2026, Ashwin expressed doubts over Arjun’s inclusion. He pointed out the depth in Lucknow’s pace attack, naming established options like Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, and emerging quick Mayank Yadav. Ashwin’s assessment suggested that breaking into such a competitive lineup would be a tough ask for the youngster.

However, Yograj Singh, known for his outspoken nature, did not hold back in his response. Having closely worked with Arjun in the past, Yograj criticised Ashwin’s comments, questioning the need to publicly dismiss a young player’s chances. His reaction quickly gained traction, adding another layer of drama to the IPL build-up.

Yograj also shed light on Arjun’s journey, stating that the youngster has dealt with physical challenges, including a spine issue, which impacted his bowling development. He emphasised that Arjun’s role and skillset are still evolving, and judging him prematurely could be unfair.
On the domestic front, Arjun’s recent performances for Goa have been modest. His outings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy haven’t produced standout numbers, which further complicates his case for regular IPL opportunities.
