Abhishek Sharma had a rollercoaster campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where India lifted the title but the young opener’s individual performances drew mixed reactions. Coming into the tournament as the world’s No.1-ranked T20I batter, expectations were sky-high, but his campaign began on a disappointing note with three consecutive ducks in the opening round. Despite his struggles, India national cricket team continued to dominate and progressed comfortably to the Super 8 stage.

Abhishek eventually broke his lean patch during India’s defeat to the South Africa national cricket team and followed it up with a crucial half-century against the Zimbabwe national cricket team in a must-win encounter. However, inconsistency crept back in when he registered single-digit scores against the West Indies and England, prompting debates over his place in the playing XI.

The team management, however, showed faith in his aggressive approach—an integral part of India’s T20 blueprint. That trust paid off in the final, where Abhishek returned to form in spectacular fashion, smashing a blistering 19-ball fifty against New Zealand national cricket team to lay the foundation for India’s title-winning performance.

While his tournament ended on a high, former India cricketer Yograj Singh offered a critical assessment of the youngster’s mindset. He said, “You fail because your mind is somewhere else… that is what is happening with Abhishek.”He further added, “The guy walks around doing reels, that isn’t his job. He should go to bed at 9 PM, wake up early, and focus on practice.”

Abhishek, who often credits Yuvraj Singh for his development, was also compared to the former all-rounder. Yograj remarked, “It would take him another age to go closer to Yuvraj Singh.” He didn’t hold back further, saying, “There is something called a single, a double… every time you cannot hit the ball in the air.”
Despite the criticism, Abhishek’s strike rate of 190.46 underlines his match-winning potential, making him a key asset for India’s future.
