Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has shared his predictions for the top individual performers in the Indian Premier League 2026, naming frontrunners for both the Orange Cap and Purple Cap. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra highlighted the growing trend of openers dominating the Orange Cap race. Backing this pattern, he tipped Yashasvi Jaiswal as a strong contender for the top run-scorer this season. The Rajasthan Royals opener has shown flashes of brilliance in previous editions, and Chopra believes IPL 2026 could be his breakthrough campaign.

“The Orange Cap is generally on an opener’s head. I feel this could be a bumper season for Yashasvi Jaiswal,” Aakash Chopra said, expressing confidence in the young batter’s ability to deliver consistently.

He also named Shubman Gill as another key contender. The Gujarat Titans captain enters the season with added motivation after missing out on India’s T20 World Cup squad. Chopra feels that hunger could translate into big runs.

“Shubman Gill could be the hungriest. He has the ability to dominate the season,” he added. Unsurprisingly, Virat Kohli also features on Chopra’s list. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru stalwart remains the IPL’s all-time leading run-scorer and is coming off a strong 2025 season, where he scored 657 runs. “Virat Kohli is always in the race. He doesn’t play much cricket outside IPL these days, so he could be fresh and ready,” Aakash Chopra noted.

Additionally, Chopra mentioned KL Rahul as a potential dark horse, especially if Delhi Capitals manage to go deep into the tournament. On the bowling front, Chopra picked Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy as leading contenders for the Purple Cap. Both bowlers recently impressed in international cricket and have the skillset to dominate in T20 conditions.

“If Bumrah stays fit and plays the full season, he could finish as the highest wicket-taker,” Aakash Chopra said, while also acknowledging concerns around his fitness heading into the tournament.
