Nuwan Thushara is set to miss the Indian Premier League 2026 after Sri Lanka Cricket reportedly denied him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) under its newly implemented fitness policy. The decision comes as a major blow for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who were counting on the pacer as part of their overseas bowling attack this season.

As per the updated guidelines, SLC has introduced strict fitness benchmarks that players must meet before being allowed to participate in overseas franchise leagues like the IPL and PSL. While Thushara is not carrying any injury and remains match-fit in terms of availability, reports suggest he failed to meet the required physical standards during recent assessments.

This means that despite being fully capable of bowling, Thushara’s participation hinges entirely on administrative clearance, which has now been withheld. Unless there is a late reversal in the decision, he is effectively ruled out of IPL 2026.

The development could also have financial implications for the Sri Lankan pacer. Thushara was reportedly set to earn around ₹1.6 crore from his IPL contract with RCB, and missing out on the tournament represents both a professional and monetary setback.

This situation comes at a challenging time in Thushara’s career. He was a key figure during Sri Lanka’s campaign in the Asia Cup 2025, where he impressed with his pace and variations. However, he later lost his place ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, despite the team dealing with injuries in the fast-bowling department.

SLC’s firm stance on fitness, however, has seen several other players clear the required benchmarks. Names like Dushmantha Chameera, Dasun Shanaka, Pathum Nissanka, and Kamindu Mendis have all secured NOCs and will feature in IPL 2026.

While the move reflects SLC’s commitment to raising fitness standards, it leaves RCB with a gap to fill and Thushara with a point to prove moving forward.
