Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have been dealt an early setback ahead of their IPL 2026 opener, with two key overseas players set to miss the initial phase of the tournament. The Hardik Pandya-led side will kick off their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, but will do so without the immediate availability of Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that both players have requested an extended break before joining the squad, a request the franchise has agreed to.

“Will Jacks and Mitchell Santner have sought an extended break and we have given it to them. I can’t give you a timeline about when they will join us,” Jayawardene said.

While their absence poses a selection challenge, Jayawardene remained upbeat, shifting focus to the leadership and evolution of skipper Hardik Pandya, who continues to be central to MI’s plans this season.

“The first time I met Hardik was in 2017. Young, raw talent with a lot of energy, and that is something I have always admired,” Mahela Jayawardene said. “Even today, that energy and passion for the game make him special. Over the years, I have seen his growth in leadership, maturity, and overall evolution as a player.”

Jayawardene also reflected on Hardik’s early days, highlighting how the all-rounder had to be managed carefully due to his high-intensity approach.

“When he started out, we had to pull him back a little because he was like a powerhouse with bat, ball and in the field. His work ethic was brilliant even back then,” he added.

The MI coach further pointed out how injuries and workload management have shaped Hardik’s career in recent years, especially during his stint as an all-format player for India.

“The injuries took a toll, and workload management became crucial. Now he understands his body better, and we have a structured approach. His commitment to fitness and skill work remains top-notch,” Mahela Jayawardene explained.

Mumbai Indians have historically struggled in opening matches, often taking time to find their rhythm in a long tournament. However, with a well-balanced squad, the team will be eager to break that trend this season. Jayawardene acknowledged that team selection remains a “healthy headache,” given the depth in the squad.

“It is a healthy headache to have so many good options. Conditions, opposition, and injuries all play a role. Squad depth is extremely important,” he said. “Sometimes it is tough to leave quality players out, but that is franchise cricket. Our job is to ensure everyone stays motivated and aligned with the team’s goal.”

As MI prepare for another title push, early adaptability could define their campaign.
