The Indian Premier League 2026 didn’t take long to spark its first major controversy, and it came in the very first innings of the tournament opener between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The moment in question involved Heinrich Klaasen, who was visibly frustrated after a contentious third-umpire decision ruled him out on the boundary.

The incident unfolded on the first ball of the 14th over when Romario Shepherd banged in a short delivery aimed at Klaasen’s body. The SRH batter attempted a powerful pull shot, sending the ball high towards the deep mid-wicket boundary. Phil Salt positioned himself under it and completed the catch, but the proximity to the boundary cushions immediately raised doubts.

Initial replays failed to provide a clear answer. Third umpire Rohan Pandit appeared unconvinced with the available angles and even sought an overhead shot to confirm the legality of the catch. However, without definitive visual evidence, he ruled Klaasen out, citing no visible disturbance of the boundary cushions at the moment of contact.

The controversy intensified soon after. Some camera angles seemed to show a slight movement in the boundary cushion—particularly one with a visible sponsor logo—suggesting possible contact with Salt’s foot. While opinions remained divided, many believed the benefit of doubt should have gone to the batter.

Adding fuel to the debate, a new replay angle surfaced after the broadcast resumed from a commercial break, prompting further scrutiny. Former England captain Michael Vaughan voiced his concerns publicly, questioning the certainty of the decision and hinting that the fielder may have brushed the cushion.

Moments like these highlight the fine margins in modern cricket, especially when it comes to boundary catches. While the laws are clear, their interpretation in high-pressure situations often leaves room for debate—something IPL 2026 has already delivered in its very first game.
