The Royal Challengers Bengaluru began their IPL 2026 campaign on a dominant note, securing a convincing win over Sunrisers Hyderabad. While the result itself was impressive, much of the post-match conversation revolved around Virat Kohli’s relentless intensity and Jacob Duffy’s disciplined bowling effort.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was particularly struck by Kohli’s energy levels during the chase, even when the game was firmly in RCB’s control. “I find him quite bizarre at this age. I tell him this during our chats now and then,” Ashwin said. He went on to describe a moment that summed up Kohli’s mindset perfectly.

“He was batting on 40-odd, there was a partnership going on, and RCB were coasting. He ran through for the first single, stopped there, and the other batter hadn’t even reached halfway, but he was already looking for a second.” Ashwin further emphasised how this approach reflects Kohli’s attitude towards the game. “It shows the enthusiasm he still brings. He walks the talk. It’s almost like he’s putting on a show for people to see how the game should be played.”

While Kohli’s intent set the tone during the chase, Jacob Duffy’s contribution with the ball proved equally vital. Making an immediate impact, the New Zealand pacer showcased both skill and game awareness on a batting-friendly surface. Ashwin was quick to highlight Duffy’s credentials and tactical execution.

“When Jacob Duffy was picked at the auction, I was probably the first one to say it was an amazing pick to replace Josh Hazlewood.” He also pointed out how Duffy adapted smartly after an early setback. “The first time he bowled full to Travis Head, he got hit down the ground. After that, he stayed away from that length and bowled very good areas.”

Ashwin concluded by crediting Duffy’s discipline for keeping SRH’s scoring in check.

“He was probably the reason the scoring was kept in control. On a day with around 400 runs, it was still a low-scoring game by Chinnaswamy standards.” In the end, it was this blend of Kohli’s unmatched intensity and Duffy’s tactical execution that powered RCB to a statement win.
