Shardul Thakur once again proved why he’s often dubbed a game-changer, delivering a timely performance on debut for the Mumbai Indians in their IPL 2026 clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. Not every impactful spell needs to be perfect, and Thakur’s 3/39 was a classic example of striking at the right moments.
After Hardik Pandya opted to bowl first, KKR got off to a flying start. Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with fluent strokeplay as KKR surged to 78/1 in the powerplay, looking set for a massive total.
Just when Mumbai needed a breakthrough, Thakur stepped in. Finn Allen attempted to accelerate but ended up finding Tilak Varma in the deep. The wicket broke KKR’s rhythm and gave MI a much-needed opening.

However, his most crucial scalp was Rahane. With KKR cruising, Pandya brought Thakur back into the attack, and he responded instantly. Rahane’s attempt to go inside-out resulted in a slice straight to cover, shifting momentum back in Mumbai’s favour.

From a dominant position, KKR were suddenly pegged back at 150/3 in 14 overs. Thakur’s spell didn’t just produce wickets—it disrupted flow and forced a reset. It was another reminder that in T20 cricket, impact often lies in timing, and Thakur continues to master that art.
