The Pakistan Super League 2026 is struggling to stay in the headlines for the right reasons, with fresh controversy overshadowing the on-field action. After a pre-season hit by multiple international withdrawals and a bizarre incident involving a match ball changing colour mid-game, the spotlight has now shifted to a ball-tampering controversy involving the Lahore Qalandars.

During their high-voltage clash against Karachi Kings, Lahore players, including Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Haris Rauf, were seen handling the ball collectively just before the final over.

The on-field umpire quickly stepped in, sensing something unusual, and called for a ball change after consulting with the fourth umpire. The officials deemed the ball’s condition to have been altered, resulting in a crucial five-run penalty against Lahore.

At that stage, Lahore Qalandars were firmly in control, defending 14 runs in the last over with Karachi Kings already five wickets down. However, the penalty shifted momentum dramatically, reducing the target to just 9 runs and easing the pressure on the batting side.

Despite Haris Rauf dismissing Khushdil Shah on the first ball, the game slipped away quickly. Abbas Afridi capitalised under pressure, smashing a boundary and a six to secure a dramatic four-wicket win for Karachi.

Post-match, Shaheen Afridi downplayed the incident, stating the team would review the footage. However, the episode has once again raised serious questions about the league’s on-field discipline and overall standards.
