Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has flagged a potential concern for the Mumbai Indians, pointing to Trent Boult’s underwhelming outing against the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026. The left-arm pacer conceded 38 runs in his four overs, struggling to make an early impact despite being a key retention for the franchise. His recent lack of game time after stepping away from New Zealand’s central contract appears to have affected his rhythm.

Boult also entered the tournament on the back of a disappointing SA20 campaign, where he managed just eight wickets in 10 matches. Against KKR, he lacked his usual swing and control, with Ajinkya Rahane putting him under pressure early. Notably, Boult bowled just one over in the power play and wasn’t trusted at the death.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin said, “I was a little surprised, actually. Mumbai didn’t execute well in the power play.” He further added, “Trent Boult didn’t start well; it’s a matter of some concern.”

He also highlighted another concern, stating, “Allah Ghazanfar, on whom MI have had a lot of faith, his debut game also didn’t go so well.” Despite these issues, Ashwin acknowledged the bigger picture, saying, “But all in all, even after a lacklustre bowling performance, Mumbai won the match comfortably.”

On the other hand, Ashwin felt KKR missed a trick with their bowling strategy. He noted, “KKR were very light in the bowling department today.” He further pointed out, “Sunil Narine’s match-up against Rohit Sharma is really good, but they didn’t bowl him in the power play only.”
