Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin admitted he had his doubts about Punjab Kings’ team selection, believing Azmatullah Omarzai deserved a place in the XI against the Gujarat Titans. However, head coach Ricky Ponting once again proved why he remains one of the sharpest tactical minds in the game, with his decision to back Xavier Bartlett paying off handsomely.

Despite having other overseas options like Ben Dwarshuis and Mitchell Owen, Punjab trusted their Australian core — and it delivered. While Marcus Stoinis had a forgettable outing, the duo of Cooper Connolly and Bartlett stepped up at crucial moments to tilt the game in PBKS’ favour in the slow overs of the chase.

Xavier Bartlett may not have shone with the ball, finishing with 0/36, but his cameo with the bat proved decisive. Walking in at No. 9, he immediately released the pressure by launching Prasidh Krishna for a six in the penultimate over — a moment that shifted momentum back towards Punjab.

Connolly, however, was the standout performer. On his IPL debut, the 22-year-old played a composed innings of 72 off 44 balls, showcasing maturity and adaptability on a tricky surface. His knock ultimately earned him the Player of the Match award.

Ravichandran Ashwin, reflecting on the game, said, “I thought before the start that Omarzai should play… but the way Bartlett bowled and batted, Ricky Ponting once again proved right.” He also praised Connolly’s temperament, adding, “This is his first game in the IPL… he adapted and played a very good innings.”
In a high-pressure chase, Connolly’s calm approach and Bartlett’s late flourish highlighted Punjab Kings’ depth — and justified Ponting’s bold selection calls.
