Rassie van der Dussen has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on a dependable and quietly impactful career with South Africa. The decision comes shortly after he was left out of Cricket South Africa’s central contract list, a move that effectively signalled the end of his journey at the highest level.

The 37-year-old’s final appearance came during the Champions Trophy clash against New Zealand in Lahore, where he scored a fighting 69 in a daunting chase. Despite the result not going South Africa’s way, it was a fitting reflection of van der Dussen’s career — composed, reliable, and often delivered under pressure.

Announcing his retirement on social media, Rassie van der Dussen shared an emotional message, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country. “It is with a proud heart and a profound sense of gratitude that I announce my retirement from International Cricket,” he wrote, adding that wearing the Proteas jersey was the greatest honour of his life. He also paid tribute to his wife, Lara, for her unwavering support throughout his journey.

Van der Dussen’s international career began relatively late in 2018, when he debuted against Zimbabwe at the age of 29. However, he quickly established himself as a key figure in South Africa’s white-ball setup. In ODIs, he was particularly consistent, amassing 2,657 runs in 71 matches at an impressive average of over 50. His tally includes six centuries and 17 fifties, with appearances in both the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups. He even had the opportunity to lead the side in one ODI in 2024.

In T20Is, Rassie van der Dussen featured in 57 matches, scoring 1,406 runs with a strike rate of 128.75. His ability to rotate strike while accelerating when needed made him a valuable middle-order option. In Tests, he played 18 matches, scoring 905 runs, though he couldn’t quite cement a long-term spot in the red-ball side.

Across formats, he finished with 4,968 international runs, playing a crucial role during a transitional phase for South African cricket. He also had a brief stint in the IPL with Rajasthan Royals.

While his international chapter ends here, van der Dussen confirmed he will continue contributing to the game through domestic cricket and mentoring, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, professionalism, and consistency.
