The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians, began IPL 2026 on a high with a commanding six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium. Despite KKR posting a daunting 220 on the board—powered by impressive fifties from Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi—Mumbai chased down the target with confidence and composure.

The foundation of the chase was laid by Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, who stitched together a fluent opening stand. Rohit looked in vintage touch, smashing 78 off 38 balls before being dismissed, while Rickelton played a brilliant knock of 81 off 43 deliveries, keeping the scoreboard ticking at a rapid pace.

Suryakumar chipped in with a quickfire 16 off just 8 balls, maintaining the momentum during the middle overs. Though wickets fell at intervals, Mumbai never lost control of the chase. Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir ensured there were no late hiccups, guiding the team home comfortably in 19.1 overs.

Earlier, KKR’s strong total was also supported by a disciplined bowling effort from Shardul Thakur, who picked up three wickets. However, Mumbai’s batting depth proved too strong on the night.

With momentum on their side and players in good rhythm, Mumbai Indians will now look to carry this winning form into their upcoming fixture against Delhi Capitals as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending sixth IPL title.
