Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has shed light on why he chose to stay away from cricket commentary after retirement, revealing that personal remarks from certain voices in the broadcasting space played a key role in his decision. Known as one of India’s finest limited-overs match-winners, Yuvraj made it clear that while cricketing criticism is part of the game, crossing into personal territory left a lasting impact.

Yuvraj, who retired from international cricket in 2019, opted for a different post-career path. Instead of stepping into the commentary box like many of his contemporaries, he focused on business ventures, including restaurants and golf leagues, while also mentoring young cricketers. His decision, however, was not without reason.

“Now that I have retired, I’ll say this,” Yuvraj Singh said in an interview with Sports Tak. “People who have talked about me—not on cricket—but made personal comments about me.” He emphasised that criticism related to performance is fair, but personal remarks cross a line. “If you talk about someone’s game, it’s understandable. It’s a game. But when you get personal, those comments stick forever with you.”

Explaining his stance further, Yuvraj Singh added, “I don’t want to sit and do commentary with people who have made personal comments about me. That’s the reason I don’t want to do commentary. Commentary is a great place to talk about the game, but this is one reason I have stayed away.”

While he may have distanced himself from broadcasting, Yuvraj remains deeply connected to the game through mentorship. He has worked closely with emerging talents like Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh, guiding them through crucial phases of their careers.

More recently, he also mentored Sanju Samson ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Reflecting on their interaction, Yuvraj Singh said, “Sanju was going through a rough patch, failing in several innings. That’s when you need to accept that something must change.”

He added, “My conversation with him started around 2024. I had been observing his batting closely. I told him clearly—if you don’t improve your footwork, you will continue to struggle.” Yuvraj also shared that he offered specific ideas to help Samson refine his technique, underlining his growing influence as a mentor in Indian cricket.
