Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹24 lakh after his side was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This marked PBKS’ second offence of the season under the Indian Premier League Code of Conduct.

As per Article 2.22, the penalties extended beyond the captain. The entire playing XI, including Impact Player Priyansh Arya, were fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever is lower. It turned into a costly outing off the field, even as Punjab delivered a near-flawless performance on it.
Despite the sanctions, PBKS showcased their batting depth by chasing down a daunting 210-run target with ease. The result underlined their aggressive approach and growing confidence, although the over-rate violation slightly overshadowed an otherwise dominant display.

Interestingly, even with this being their second offence, Iyer will not face a suspension if another breach occurs. This is due to a rule change introduced ahead of IPL 2025, which scrapped the earlier provision of a one-match ban after three offences. Instead, the league now focuses on financial penalties and in-game restrictions.

However, discipline still carries long-term consequences. The IPL has aligned its system with ICC regulations by introducing demerit points. Any breach adds points to a player or official’s record, which remain valid for 36 months. Accumulating these points could eventually lead to suspensions, shifting the focus from immediate punishment to sustained accountability.

On the field, the Punjab Kings were clinical. Priyansh Arya set the tone with a blistering 39 off 11 balls, putting immediate pressure on CSK’s bowlers. Iyer then anchored the chase with a composed half-century, ensuring stability amid the attacking approach.
CSK struggled to contain the scoring despite early assistance from the pitch. Their bowlers failed to build pressure, allowing PBKS to cruise to victory in just 18.4 overs. While the fine grabbed headlines, Punjab’s dominant chase reinforced their credentials as a serious contender this season.
