Yuvraj Singh’s recent remarks about the end of his India career in 2019 have once again sparked a wider conversation around communication and transparency in Indian cricket. The two-time World Cup winner said he was never given a clear picture of where he stood once his international future began to fade.

According to Yuvraj, there was little to no communication from then India ODI captain Virat Kohli or head coach Ravi Shastri, and it was only after approaching MS Dhoni that he received some direction. Yuvraj, who was left out of India’s 2019 ODI World Cup squad, announced his retirement while the tournament was still going on in England.

His comments have now drawn strong support from former India opener Wasim Jaffer, who felt that senior players deserve honest conversations rather than silence as their careers near an end.

“Earlier players used to find out in newspapers if their career is over or not, although things have gotten better in terms of communication still if a big player like @YUVSTRONG12 who’s won India two WC says he wasn’t communicated then that’s not right. Communication should be there,” Wasim Jaffer wrote on X.

In an interview with Sports Tak, Yuvraj Singh said several senior cricketers, including Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh, were also left without clarity about their future with India. He stressed that selectors, captains or coaches should at least sit down with players and explain how they view things, even if the discussion is uncomfortable.

“I feel that those who are at the end of their careers need clarity. I didn’t get it, neither did Zaheer, Sehwag, or Harbhajan. The captain, coach or selector, whoever it may be, should sit with the player and explain how they see things,” Yuvraj Singh said.

“For example, when I went through my own situation, I had zero clarity. There was no clarity from the National Cricket Academy, no clarity from the captain or coach. At the very least, if someone has played so much cricket, they deserve respect,” he added.
