Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has become the latest IPL skipper to face a fine from the BCCI, with the opener penalised ₹12 lakh for a slow over-rate during his team’s thrilling one-run win over Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. It was GT’s first win of IPL 2026, but the victory came with a disciplinary setback after the franchise was found guilty of breaching Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.

Since this was the Gujarat Titans’ first offence of the season, Gill has been hit with a financial penalty rather than a suspension. GT are now the second team this year to be sanctioned for over-rate issues, with Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer already being fined twice.
Under the previous rules, a third offence would have led to a match ban, but the updated IPL Code of Conduct has done away with that punishment for now. The disciplinary action was not limited to Gill alone. Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma was also fined 25 per cent of his match fee and handed a demerit point for his behaviour during the clash against Kolkata Knight Riders.

While the IPL release did not spell out the exact incident, the punishment was widely linked to his visible dissent after a debatable catch by Varun Chakaravarthy led to his dismissal.

For Gill, though, the fine will be a footnote to an otherwise memorable night. He led from the front with the bat, scoring a classy 70 off 45 balls to help Gujarat Titans post 210/4 after being asked to bat first.

Delhi Capitals made a strong response through KL Rahul’s magnificent 92 and David Miller’s unbeaten 41, but GT held their nerve in the final over to seal a dramatic one-run victory. The Titans now turn their attention to their next fixture against Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday.
