Cooper Connolly made an immediate impact in the IPL, producing a player-of-the-match performance on his Punjab Kings debut against the Gujarat Titans. The young Australian all-rounder showed remarkable composure in a tense chase, steering PBKS through pressure with a measured innings that underlined why he is being viewed as one of the most promising rising talents in T20 cricket.

At a time when power-hitting dominates the shortest format, Connolly’s knock stood out for a different reason. He showed that controlled batting, smart tempo and shot selection can still be just as valuable as brute force. His innings against GT was a reminder that not every match needs to be won with constant boundary-hitting. Sometimes, balance is the real difference between surviving a chase and finishing it.

Cooper Connolly has already built a strong base in T20 cricket, scoring 978 runs in 55 matches at a strike rate of 135.45. While modern T20 demands big hitting, he is comfortable backing his own method and believes his game is built on strengths that have worked well so far.

“I think everyone has their own strengths and I’m pretty keen to stick to my own strengths. It’s been successful for me so far,” Cooper Connolly told News18 CricketNext during the JioStar Press Room ahead of IPL 2026 Rivalry Week.

He also admitted that while power has become central to T20 batting, he prefers to grow into that aspect gradually rather than force a change in style.

“Obviously power is becoming a big part of T20 cricket, but there’s other ways to go around and that’s going to be me sort of understanding and learning and I’m going to get around that.”

After his unbeaten 72 off 44 balls in the successful chase of 165, Cooper Connolly described himself as more of a tempo player than a pure six-hitter. That approach, he said, has helped him perform consistently across different tournaments.

“I’m pretty happy with sort of the tempo game at the moment because that’s allowing me to perform the best that I can for this team,” he said. “And I’ll slowly adapt from that and I’ll get better at obviously those areas. But if you need to sort of, yeah, just nailing down my game and then adding little bits to the little bits to the puzzle.”
