Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians came together in a heartfelt gesture during their IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium, wearing black armbands to honour the late Asha Bhosle. A moment of silence was also observed before the start of play, as players, officials, and fans paid tribute to one of India’s most iconic voices.

Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after battling multiple health complications, including extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. The official cause of death was reported as multi-organ failure. Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news, prompting an outpouring of grief from across the country, including tributes from political leaders like Narendra Modi and several figures from the cricketing fraternity.

Her legacy in Indian music remains unparalleled. With a career spanning over eight decades, Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs across multiple languages and genres, earning recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most recorded artist. Honoured with prestigious awards such as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, she played a defining role in shaping the sound of Indian cinema.

 

Her mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at her residence, Casa Grande, before the final rites take place at Shivaji Park. Mumbai, the city where her journey began in the 1940s, remained central to her life and career.

Amid the emotional backdrop, the match went ahead with Hardik Pandya winning the toss and opting to bowl first for Mumbai Indians. MI made two changes, bringing in Mitchell Santner and Mayank Markande, while RCB opted for a single change, replacing Josh Hazlewood with Jacob Duffy.

While the contest promised high-octane cricket, the evening began on a solemn note, as the IPL paid tribute to a legend whose voice transcended generations.
