Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Kartik Tyagi produced a moment of pure pace to halt Sanju Samson’s charge, delivering a fiery blow that shifted momentum in their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. Just when Samson looked set for another big score, Tyagi’s raw speed proved too good, denying the CSK opener a second successive fifty.

Samson has been one of Chennai’s biggest positives this season. Initially picked to strengthen the top order and serve as a backup wicketkeeper, he has seamlessly taken over the gloves in the absence of MS Dhoni while also leading the batting charge. His unbeaten century against Delhi Capitals not only anchored CSK’s innings but also helped them secure their first win of the campaign.
In this match, Samson once again looked in control. After Ayush Mhatre’s explosive start in the Powerplay, the responsibility of building the innings fell largely on Samson, especially with Dewald Brevis struggling to make an impact in his first outing of the season. Samson responded with authority, finding boundaries with ease and keeping the scoring rate healthy.

He even took on Tyagi early, reading a slower delivery and dispatching it confidently. But the pacer quickly adjusted. Known for his ability to generate serious pace, Tyagi went back to his strength and delivered a searing 148 km/h thunderbolt aimed straight at the stumps. Samson, expecting another variation, was caught off guard as the ball crashed into his leg stump in a classic “you miss, I hit” dismissal.

The CSK opener walked back for a well-compiled 48 off 32 balls, an innings that kept his team on track but fell just short of another milestone. Despite a mixed run that includes three single-digit scores, Samson has now accumulated 185 runs in five matches, placing him among the top run-getters this season.

Chepauk, traditionally known for aiding spinners, has surprisingly produced high-scoring contests this year. CSK have crossed the 200-run mark twice at this venue, but their bowlers have also struggled to defend big totals. With another strong start in this game, Chennai will once again be eyeing a 200-plus score.
For KKR, however, chasing such totals has been a challenge this season, making Tyagi’s breakthrough against Samson a potentially decisive moment in the contest.
