Former India pacer Munaf Patel has come out strongly in support of head coach Gautam Gambhir, highlighting the challenges of managing a high-profile dressing room and the importance of having a firm, honest leader at the helm of the national side. Coaching the Indian men’s cricket team is widely regarded as one of the toughest jobs in the sport, given the expectations, scrutiny, and the responsibility of handling some of the biggest names in world cricket.

According to Munaf Patel, Gambhir’s straightforward nature is precisely what makes him effective, even if it doesn’t always make him popular. “Just remember this, if a head coach like Gautam Gambhir is removed, then handling the players will become very difficult,” Munaf said in an interview. “He is a genuine person. He speaks the truth as it is, and many people don’t like that.”
Munaf Patel emphasised that strong man-management is at the core of success at the international level, especially in a team filled with established stars. He pointed out that Gambhir has the courage to take tough decisions, including dropping big players if required.

“Everyone knows that if things go off track, he has the courage to make big calls. Man-management is the most important thing, and it’s not easy. Try saying no to someone like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma,” he added.

Under Gambhir’s tenure, India recently lifted the T20 World Cup, marking a significant achievement during a transitional phase. With senior players like Kohli and Rohit having dominated world cricket for over a decade, managing their roles during a shift in team dynamics has been no easy task.
Munaf Patel also hinted at the broader challenges Gambhir faces behind the scenes. “Tell me, how many people is he making unhappy just to do his job honestly?” he questioned.

As India navigates a period of change, particularly in Test cricket, Gambhir’s no-nonsense approach continues to shape the team’s direction — even if it means making difficult, unpopular decisions for the greater good.
