Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has raised serious questions over Kolkata Knight Riders’ tactical approach following their defeat to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026, particularly highlighting the team’s questionable use of Cameron Green in a high-pressure chase. Finch was notably surprised by KKR’s decision to send Green in at No. 6, a position the Australian all-rounder is not typically associated with in T20 cricket.

Known for his effectiveness higher up the order, Green was thrust into a difficult situation, especially against spin on a turning Chepauk surface. “When you’ve got that much experience in the dugout, you expect better decision-making in key moments,” Aaron Finch said during a discussion. “Cameron Green batting at No. 6 is unusual. He hasn’t done that a lot in T20 cricket.”
The challenge was further compounded by the match situation. Green walked in to face quality spin from Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad, a scenario Finch described as far from ideal for the big-hitting all-rounder.

“Walking out to bat against spin straight away, especially in a run chase, is probably his toughest situation. He lasted just one ball, and that tells you how difficult it was,” Aaron Finch added.
Green’s struggles this season have only added to KKR’s concerns. Despite being a high-value acquisition, his performances with both bat and ball have not matched expectations. However, Finch was quick to point out that selections should never be influenced by auction price.

“You don’t pick a team based on price tags. That’s not how it works. Auctions are about demand and skill sets, not guarantees. You need to play players in roles where they perform best, and for Green, that’s higher up the order,” he explained.
Aaron Finch also suggested that KKR should consider bringing in Tim Seifert, who has been in excellent form and offers a more natural fit at the top. With a dynamic range of shots, including scoops and ramps, Seifert presents a different challenge for opposition bowlers.

“He’s a player who forces captains to rethink their plans because of his versatility,” Aaron Finch noted. “At some point, you have to accept that something isn’t working and be willing to adjust.”
With KKR still searching for their first win, Finch’s remarks underline the need for a tactical reset if they are to revive their campaign.
