The clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 23 of IPL 2026 took a concerning turn when LSG skipper Rishabh Pant suffered an injury scare mid-innings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. After RCB opted to field first, the early momentum tilted heavily in their favour — and Pant’s unfortunate exit only added to LSG’s troubles.

Pant was struck painfully on the elbow by a sharp delivery from Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood, forcing him to retire hurt and walk off the field. Clearly frustrated, the LSG captain looked disappointed as he made his way back to the dugout, with Hazlewood showing sportsmanship by checking on him. The extent of the injury remains a major concern, especially given LSG’s fragile batting form this season.

At the time of Pant’s departure, LSG were already under pressure. The top order once again failed to deliver, with Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran falling cheaply. This has been a recurring issue for the franchise, leaving the middle order exposed far too early in the innings.

In Pant’s absence, the responsibility shifted onto Mitchell Marsh, who showed composure at the crease. The Australian all-rounder looked in control, anchoring the innings and attempting to rebuild after the early setbacks. For LSG to post a competitive total, Marsh’s role became even more crucial.

Pant’s resilience as a cricketer is well documented. Fans will remember his courageous knock during India’s Test series against England, where he battled through injury to deliver under pressure. That fighting spirit could yet come into play if he is cleared to return later in the match.

Interestingly, Rishabh Pant had sounded confident at the toss, emphasising the importance of collective responsibility and trust within the squad. However, with inconsistent performances continuing to haunt LSG, the team finds itself in a familiar spot — searching for stability and match-winning contributions.

As IPL 2026 progresses, LSG will need both fitness clarity on Pant and improved top-order performances if they are to stay competitive in a tightly contested season.
