Mumbai Indians’ reputation as slow starters continues to haunt them in IPL 2026, as they slumped to their fourth defeat of the season despite posting a competitive total at the Wankhede Stadium. Riding on a brilliant century from Quinton de Kock, MI put up 195/6, a score that looked defendable on paper. However, Punjab Kings made a mockery of the chase, cruising to victory in just 16.3 overs with seven wickets in hand to maintain their unbeaten run.

The defeat has raised serious questions within the MI camp, and captain Hardik Pandya didn’t shy away from admitting that the team needs a reset. Speaking after the match, Pandya acknowledged that it was time for honest introspection.

“To be very honest, I don’t have much to say right now,” he said. “I think we really need to go back to the drawing board and see where we are lacking. Is it individuals? Is it as a group? Is it as planning? We’ll just figure it out and see what we can do next.”

While Naman Dhir’s half-century provided some support to de Kock’s hundred, MI may still have fallen slightly short of a par total. Pandya, however, was quick to credit Punjab Kings for their clinical performance, highlighting how conditions also played a role.

“I think you need to give credit to them as well. The ball started reversing, and at that same point of time, the dew didn’t come. In the second innings, the dew came and it slightly got better, but having said that, they just outbatted us.”

He admitted that Punjab were superior in all departments and stressed the need for accountability moving forward.

“They bowled better, they batted better, they fielded better, and that cost us the game. We need to see if we have to make some tough decisions or back ourselves. These are hard questions, and ownership has to be taken.” Mumbai Indians now sit ninth on the points table and face Gujarat Titans in a crucial upcoming clash.
