Krunal Pandya is no longer just a dependable all-round option quietly doing his job. At Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he has undergone a noticeable transformation, evolving into a cricketer who is actively redefining his role in modern T20 cricket. There is now a greater variety in his bowling and a renewed sense of authority in his batting—qualities that weren’t always strongly associated with him earlier in his career. The left-arm spinner, who was instrumental in RCB’s maiden IPL title triumph in 2025 and earned Player of the Match in the final, has added an unexpected weapon to his arsenal this season—the bouncer.

Traditionally, finger spinners rely on flight, drift, and subtle variations in pace. But Krunal has disrupted that template by introducing sharp, skiddy bouncers that rush batters and force them onto the back foot. What initially seemed like a surprise tactic is now becoming a calculated strategy. Opposition batters are beginning to anticipate it. In a recent clash against the Gujarat Titans, Sai Sudharsan showcased that awareness with a controlled upper cut off a 116 kmph bouncer.

Yet even as the element of surprise fades, the delivery’s effectiveness remains intact because of the doubt it creates. RCB mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik believes Krunal is pushing the boundaries of what finger spin can look like in T20 cricket. Speaking ahead of a key fixture, Karthik highlighted how rare it is to see a spinner innovate at this level while maintaining control and intent.

“Krunal Pandya is a player that this game is going to remember for a long time because he is doing something that has not been done before. Pushing the boundaries of what finger spinner means,” Dinesh Karthik said.

Importantly, Karthik stressed that Krunal’s use of the bouncer is not for show. It is a well-thought-out tactic, executed with clarity and purpose.

“He’s bowling deliveries that people really couldn’t fathom a few years ago… and he’s using it very cleverly, very wisely when the situation demands,” Dinesh Karthik explained.

Statistically, the numbers around his bouncers may not appear extraordinary. Krunal has bowled around 10 such deliveries this season, conceding runs at a high strike rate and even being hit for sixes. However, T20 cricket is not always about raw numbers. The psychological impact of unpredictability often outweighs the immediate outcome. By forcing batters to second-guess their approach, Krunal is creating opportunities for mistakes.

Karthik also pointed out that timing is key. Krunal understands when to deploy this variation, ensuring it maximizes pressure on the batter. “He knows that given the moment… it creates doubt in the batter and often delivers the result he wants,” he added.
