Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has urged Cricket South Africa to reconsider Heinrich Klaasen’s international retirement, following the wicketkeeper-batter’s sensational form in IPL 2026. Pietersen believes Klaasen could be the missing piece in South Africa’s quest for a maiden ICC limited-overs World Cup title, especially with the 2027 edition set to be hosted at home.

The call comes on the back of Klaasen’s match-winning performance for Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he played a crucial role in a high-pressure run chase against the Mumbai Indians. South Africa’s long-standing struggle in ICC tournaments remains a talking point — despite their rich cricketing legacy, they are yet to win a men’s ODI World Cup. Their last major ICC limited-overs triumph dates back to the 1998 Champions Trophy, and even a recent appearance in the 2024 T20 World Cup final ended in heartbreak against India.

Kevin Pietersen took to social media to underline Klaasen’s importance, suggesting that players of his calibre are rare and could significantly elevate South Africa’s chances on home soil.

“South Africa have never won a cricket World Cup. There should be a phone call to Heinrich Klaasen to ask him to return and be central to their campaign,” Kevin Pietersen wrote. “Given the form he is in, he could be the difference-maker. Players like him don’t come around often.”

However, Heinrich Klaasen has already made his stance clear. Despite briefly reconsidering his decision ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, the explosive batter ultimately chose to prioritise personal commitments over a return to international cricket.

“It was a thought for about two weeks, but then we decided against it,” Heinrich Klaasen said in a video shared by the IPL. “My family played a huge role. I did feel a bit of FOMO watching the World Cup, but after speaking with Aiden Markram, I realised it’s not going to happen.”

While his international future remains closed for now, Klaasen’s franchise form continues to soar. He has been one of the standout performers this season, scoring 414 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of over 157, placing him among the top contenders for the Orange Cap alongside teammate Abhishek Sharma.

With his consistency and match-winning ability, Klaasen remains a key figure for Sunrisers Hyderabad as they push for a strong finish in IPL 2026, even as debates around his international comeback continue to gather momentum.
