Former India off-spinner R Ashwin shared how Sanju Samson has turned the corner in his career by realizing that he can be a team man by only taking a balanced approach to batting. According to Ashwin, Samson was earlier too keen to put team goals first as well.

Notably, Samson was India’s unexpected hero in the T20 World Cup 2026, as he smashed three quickfire fifties in back-to-back games, including the semifinal and the final. He also scored a hundred for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2026 match at Chepauk on April 11 as well.

During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin said: “He’s probably figured out that he can be measured and yet be a team player. I always felt Sanju put the team first and sometimes didn’t quite calculate the fact that he could take the team through. That calculation has started coming through a lot better. He can continue to improve in terms of understanding the right and wrong match-ups and also see how the game pans out.”

However, R Ashwin played quite a lot with Sanju Samson. Between 2022 and 2024, he was also part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad as well.
“Sanju, he really does like his space. The way he practices, the way he turns up for a game. The way he wants to stay in his calm zone sometimes. That kind of support needs to come for him from around the people who he has. He’s quite disciplined. He’s turned a corner there,” R Ashwin concluded.
