The atmosphere at Wankhede Stadium came alive as Suryakumar Yadav confirmed a major boost for the Mumbai Indians ahead of their IPL 2026 clash against Lucknow Super Giants. The big news? Rohit Sharma was back in the playing XI after recovering from a hamstring injury that had sidelined him for the past few matches.

There had been growing anticipation around Rohit’s return after he was spotted training in recent days, with positive updates emerging from within the MI camp. He was initially expected to feature in the away fixture against Chennai Super Kings, but didn’t make the final cut. This time, however, MI ensured his comeback at a crucial stage of their campaign.

Rohit’s return comes as a timely boost for a side that has struggled to find stability at the top of the order. In his absence, Mumbai experimented with multiple combinations, including Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks and Danish Malewar, but failed to settle on a consistent opening pair.

The moment Suryakumar announced Rohit’s inclusion at the toss, the Wankhede crowd erupted, underlining the veteran’s importance to the franchise and its fans.

“Hardik is not fully fit, so just a bit of rest,” Suryakumar Yadav said. “We have changes. Corbin Bosch is in for Trent Boult and our very own Rohit Sharma is back. We have to show character now, enjoy the game and give the best for the crowd.”

Rohit last featured in MI’s home game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he had to retire hurt after scoring 19. Despite the injury setback, he has shown promising form this season, scoring 137 runs in four matches at an average of 45.66.

His campaign began on a strong note with a match-winning 78 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, followed by a solid 35 against the Delhi Capitals. Although he had a quiet outing against the Rajasthan Royals, his overall impact at the top remains significant. With MI facing a disciplined LSG bowling attack, Rohit’s return could be the stabilising factor they desperately need in a must-win encounter.
