In the high-octane world of the IPL, headlines are usually reserved for explosive batters and express pacers. But after the Gujarat Titans’ clinical win over the Punjab Kings, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shifted the spotlight to a less celebrated figure—someone working quietly behind the scenes. While much of Gujarat’s success is often credited to head coach Ashish Nehra and his energetic leadership style, Ashwin believes the franchise’s real edge lies in the understated influence of Parthiv Patel.

According to him, it’s Patel’s deep understanding of local conditions that gives GT a decisive advantage at home. Ravichandran Ashwin praised what he called the “GT map”—a well-structured blueprint developed by Nehra and his support staff. The key, he noted, is how efficiently Gujarat utilises its resources. Players are assigned roles based on conditions rather than reputation, a strategy that has paid off consistently this season.
“GT’s strength is their clarity,” Ravichandran Ashwin explained. “They maximise every player’s potential. Someone like Washington Sundar stepping into a finisher’s role shows how flexible and well-planned their system is.”

He also highlighted the bowling unit’s discipline, particularly their preference for a “hit-the-deck” approach. By reading surfaces accurately and preparing pitches with a slight grass covering, GT’s pace attack—featuring names like Kagiso Rabada, Jason Holder, and Mohammed Siraj—has been able to extract bounce and seam movement effectively.
“Tactically, they’re one of the smartest teams in the tournament,” Ravichandran Ashwin said, adding that Nehra’s ability to maintain a positive environment during long training sessions plays a crucial role in keeping the squad aligned.

However, it was Patel’s contribution that Ashwin was most keen to underline. A former India wicketkeeper and a key figure in Gujarat’s domestic success, Patel brings invaluable local knowledge—something data and analytics can’t always replicate.
“In the IPL, there’s always an underrated figure who knows the home ground inside out,” Ravichandran Ashwin noted. “Parthiv Patel understands every detail—how different soil types behave, how moisture affects the pitch, and how conditions change across games.”

Drawing on conversations with Sachin Tendulkar, Ashwin also pointed out how geographical factors, such as the nearby Sabarmati River, can influence pitch behaviour by affecting moisture levels and seam movement. According to him, GT’s smart pitch selection—especially its choice to opt for black-soil surfaces against certain teams—reflects a deeper strategic awareness.
As IPL 2026 progresses, the Gujarat Titans are proving that success isn’t just about star power. It’s about planning, adaptability, and the kind of cricketing intelligence that often operates away from the spotlight.
