Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2026 campaign continues to unravel at a critical stage, with another disappointing defeat adding pressure on Axar Patel and his side. Facing Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi once again faltered with the bat, managing only 155/7 in their allotted 20 overs after opting to bat first — a decision that ultimately backfired.

The innings never truly found momentum. DC were reduced to 69/5 early, exposing a fragile middle order that has struggled for consistency throughout the season. A crucial 65-run partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi for the sixth wicket helped salvage some respectability, but the total still felt under-par on a surface that demanded smarter application.

Chennai Super Kings, powered by a composed and calculated innings from Sanju Samson, chased down the target with relative ease to keep their playoff hopes alive. For Delhi, however, the defeat highlighted recurring issues, particularly the lack of a set batter anchoring the innings.

Speaking after the match, Axar Patel did not shy away from addressing the shortcomings. “The way the wicket was behaving in the first innings, I thought 155 was a good score,” he said. “We are playing with eight batters, so I feel we were 10–15 runs short.”

Axar also pointed out how conditions evolved during the match. “I feel the wicket got slightly better in the second innings, but it was just a case of us not having any set batter. When set batters play, you feel there is nothing much happening in the wicket. But I still think there was something in it for the bowlers. For new batters, it wasn’t easy as the length ball was holding up a bit. One can see how Samson finished the game — it was about having a set batter.”

Delhi’s struggles weren’t limited to batting. On a pitch that offered assistance to spinners, Chennai’s Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein extracted significant turn and control. In contrast, Kuldeep Yadav had an off day, conceding 34 runs in three overs without picking up a wicket, failing to replicate the same impact.

Axar Patel acknowledged the gap in execution. “The only positive was the way we batted in the end after losing five wickets. We got a good finish. “In the bowling department, I missed my partner Kuldeep Yadav.”

With just eight points from 10 matches, Delhi Capitals now find themselves in a must-win situation. Their playoff hopes hang by a thread, requiring victories in all remaining matches. “Obviously, we don’t have any room for mistakes. We need to be clear in our mindset. We need to win the remaining four matches,” Axar concluded. Delhi’s next challenge comes against Kolkata Knight Riders, a fixture that could define the direction of their season.
