Punjab Kings’ fielding woes came back to haunt them yet again in IPL 2026, as a series of costly errors handed Sunrisers Hyderabad a significant advantage in a high-stakes encounter. The biggest moment arrived early in the innings when Cooper Connolly dropped a straightforward catch in the deep, offering Ishan Kishan a crucial lifeline at a time when SRH were building momentum.

At that stage, Kishan was just getting started, batting on 9 off 9 balls alongside Heinrich Klaasen. With SRH already off to a flying start through Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, Punjab had a golden opportunity to pull things back. Instead, the missed chance allowed Hyderabad to maintain control of the innings. Given PBKS’ recent struggles in the field, this wasn’t an isolated lapse but part of a worrying trend.

Earlier in the season, Shashank Singh had dropped KL Rahul against Delhi Capitals — a mistake that proved costly as Rahul went on to score a match-defining century. These repeated lapses highlight a deeper issue within the Punjab setup, where fielding errors are consistently undoing good work with the ball.

The problems didn’t end there. In the same match, Shashank Singh dropped another straightforward chance, this time off Klaasen, while Lockie Ferguson also failed to hold onto an opportunity created by Yuzvendra Chahal. In total, PBKS missed multiple chances in a single innings, allowing SRH’s middle order to settle and accelerate.

Speaking at the toss, captain Shreyas Iyer had expressed confidence in his team despite back-to-back defeats. He pointed out that the side had taken valuable lessons and remained motivated. However, the on-field execution told a different story. Dropped catches and missed chances overshadowed any tactical intent, especially on a batting-friendly surface at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The pitch, as Iyer noted, looked ideal for batting, with no grass cover, making fielding discipline even more critical. In such conditions, every chance matters — and Punjab failed to capitalise.

Even former Australia captain Ricky Ponting couldn’t hide his frustration during commentary, remarking that “the ball is flying everywhere” around Shashank Singh. His reaction summed up a chaotic fielding display that could have serious implications for PBKS moving forward.

If Punjab Kings are to maintain their position at the top of the table and push for a playoff spot, tightening their fielding standards is no longer optional — it’s essential.
