Sanju Samson has reportedly emerged as one of the strongest candidates to become India’s next T20I captain following a string of impressive performances in international cricket and IPL 2026. According to a report by Jagran, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has been highly impressed with Samson’s consistency, calm temperament, and leadership qualities in the shortest format.

The wicketkeeper-batter played a crucial role in India’s triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. Although Samson did not feature in the opening matches, the team management led by Gautam Gambhir later brought him back into the playing XI, and the Kerala star grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Samson first produced a sensational unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in a must-win clash before following it up with match-defining knocks of 89 against England and New Zealand in the knockout stages. His performances under pressure eventually earned him the Player of the Tournament award and significantly boosted his reputation within Indian cricket.

Reports further suggest that Samson could be handed the captaincy for India’s upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England after the conclusion of IPL 2026. While current skipper Suryakumar Yadav remains in contention to continue temporarily, his recent struggles with the bat have raised concerns among selectors.

Suryakumar has endured a disappointing IPL 2026 season so far, managing only 195 runs in 10 matches at an average of 19.52. His inconsistent form during the T20 World Cup has also added to the debate surrounding India’s leadership future in the format.
Shreyas Iyer was another name discussed for the role, but reports claim his absence from India’s T20I side since December 2023 has weakened his chances. The selectors reportedly want Iyer to first re-establish himself in the squad before taking on leadership duties.
