Sunrisers Hyderabad’s explosive batting unit endured a complete meltdown against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, crashing to just 86 all out in 14.5 overs while chasing 169 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The crushing 82-run defeat marked SRH’s biggest loss by runs in IPL history and exposed serious flaws in their ultra-aggressive batting approach on challenging surfaces.

Unlike the batting-friendly tracks seen throughout IPL 2026, the Ahmedabad pitch offered movement and variable bounce, making strokeplay far more difficult than usual. Gujarat Titans adapted brilliantly to the conditions, while SRH’s star-studded lineup failed to change gears.

Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj exploited the new-ball movement perfectly, reducing Hyderabad to 34/4 inside the Powerplay and putting the chase beyond recovery almost immediately. The likes of Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen looked intent on attacking from ball one, but the risky approach backfired badly on a surface where patience was equally important.

SRH never recovered after the early collapse and eventually folded for their lowest total of the season. In contrast, GT’s batters showed composure despite facing the same difficult conditions. Sai Sudharsan anchored the innings with a mature 61 off 44 deliveries, while Washington Sundar produced a valuable 50 from 33 balls to help Gujarat post a competitive 168/5.

Their calculated batting display ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla also appeared to question SRH’s reckless batting strategy after the match. “When you need to score 160, why lose wickets trying to hit sixes right from the beginning,” Shukla posted on X.

For Gujarat, Rabada and Jason Holder completely dominated the contest. Rabada finished with 3/28, while Holder returned outstanding figures of 3/20 as GT climbed to the top of the IPL 2026 points table with a clinical all-round performance.

Despite the humiliating defeat, SRH captain Pat Cummins defended his batting unit and insisted there was no reason to panic. “Our batting order’s been fantastic. I don’t think we need to read too far into today. This happens in T20 cricket,” Pat Cummins said after the match.
