Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians head into their IPL 2026 clash in Dharamsala under very different circumstances compared to when they last met earlier this season. Back in April, PBKS looked unstoppable as they chased down a daunting 196-run target against MI with 21 balls to spare. At that stage, Punjab were unbeaten in five matches, with only a washout denying them a perfect record. Since then, however, the momentum has shifted dramatically. Punjab Kings have now slipped into a difficult phase after suffering four consecutive defeats.

Their explosive batting line-up managed to cover up several bowling concerns during the first half of the tournament, but those weaknesses have now started hurting them badly. The biggest example came against the Delhi Capitals, where PBKS failed to defend a massive total of 264. Another disappointing loss followed when they failed to defend 210 in Dharamsala. Despite the setbacks, Punjab still control their own playoff destiny. Three wins from their final three league games would guarantee them a top-two finish in the IPL 2026 standings.
However, they desperately need a confidence-boosting performance, especially from their bowling and fielding units, which have struggled under pressure in recent matches. The responsibility will once again rest heavily on the batting group. Punjab’s aggressive approach with the bat has been their biggest strength this season, but they now need greater consistency and stronger finishing efforts to give their bowlers enough cushion on challenging surfaces.

Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, arrive with nothing to lose after being officially eliminated from the playoff race. Their campaign has been filled with frustration, including a heartbreaking last-ball defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their previous outing. Yet, teams playing without pressure can often become dangerous opponents, and MI still possess match-winners like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya, all eager to finish the season strongly.
Conditions in Dharamsala are expected to once again favour batters despite some seam movement and uneven bounce. Rain is forecast earlier in the day, but interruptions during the game appear unlikely. With the thin mountain air helping the ball travel further, another high-scoring encounter could be on the cards. Historically, Punjab Kings hold a slight edge in this rivalry, leading Mumbai Indians 18-17 overall, including a win in their only previous IPL meeting in Dharamsala back in 2013.
Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Punjab Kings could face a selection headache ahead of their crucial IPL 2026 clash against Mumbai Indians, with Lockie Ferguson still doubtful due to a niggle that forced him to miss the previous match. The franchise is yet to provide clarity on his availability. PBKS may also consider using Yuzvendra Chahal earlier in the innings, especially given his strong record against Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.
However, Tilak Varma has enjoyed success against the leg-spinner with an impressive strike rate. If Ferguson remains unavailable, Australian pacer Ben Dwarshuis could lose his place after a difficult IPL debut, with Xavier Bartlett emerging as a likely replacement option.

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians are also monitoring the fitness of captain Hardik Pandya, who is recovering from back spasms and remains doubtful for the Dharamsala encounter. Suryakumar Yadav, however, is expected to be available. MI may strengthen their pace attack further after not using Raghu Sharma in the previous game, with Shardul Thakur or Ashwani Kumar potentially coming into the playing XI.
