Rohit Sharma once again showed his trademark sense of humour after the Mumbai Indians pulled off a thrilling win against the Punjab Kings in IPL 2026 on Thursday night in Dharamsala. While the Mumbai Indians successfully chased down a 200-plus target with one ball remaining, Rohit admitted in his own light-hearted style that his innings was far from ideal for a T20 chase.

The former MI captain scored a slow-paced 25 off 26 balls, managing just two sixes during his stay at the crease. On a batting-friendly surface where runs came quickly for most batters, Rohit’s cautious knock stood out. In contrast, opening partner Ryan Rickelton provided an explosive start, smashing 48 runs off only 23 deliveries and setting the tone for the chase.

Mumbai eventually crossed the finish line thanks to a sensational unbeaten 75 off 33 balls from Tilak Varma. The young left-hander dominated the Punjab Kings’ attack with six fours and six sixes. Will Jacks also played a crucial cameo, remaining unbeaten on 25 from just 10 deliveries.

After the match, Rohit Sharma addressed the team in the dressing room, and his hilarious self-deprecating comment quickly went viral on social media.

“Guys, great win, it was a complete team effort with the bat. It was good to see everyone chip in while I was enjoying my bit of Test cricket,” Rohit Sharma joked, leaving the dressing room in splits.

Despite the slow knock, Rohit has still enjoyed a solid IPL 2026 campaign overall. The experienced opener has scored 268 runs from seven innings at an impressive strike-rate of 164.41.

Rohit also praised Rickelton for providing momentum during the powerplay and highlighted the importance of the aggressive opening partnership in a difficult chase. Mumbai Indians, already eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race, registered only their fourth win of the season. They now have two matches remaining and will next face Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens after a five-day break.
