Virat Kohli once again showed why he remains one of the sharpest cricketing minds in the game during the high-pressure IPL 2026 clash between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday. While Kohli grabbed headlines earlier in the match for his brilliant half-century and another major IPL milestone, the former RCB captain also played a key tactical role in helping his side strike early during Punjab’s chase of 223 runs.

The moment came in the very first over when experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar targeted young opener Priyansh Arya with a clever short-ball plan. Priyansh, who has struggled for consistency in recent matches, attempted to pull the delivery but failed to control the shot properly. The ball took a thick bottom edge and ballooned towards midwicket, where Romario Shepherd completed a simple catch.

Kohli was visibly fired up after the breakthrough and celebrated aggressively alongside stand-in skipper Jitesh Sharma. Cameras also captured Kohli making hand gestures towards Jitesh, seemingly explaining how the trap had been set perfectly for Priyansh’s preferred pull shot.

The dismissal highlighted a growing concern in Priyansh Arya’s batting. Opposition teams have increasingly attacked him with deliveries aimed into the body, restricting his scoring areas and exposing a technical weakness against short-pitched bowling. Ahead of this match, the left-handed batter had managed only one fifty in his previous five innings.

Meanwhile, Kohli continued his sensational IPL 2026 campaign with another commanding knock. The RCB superstar scored 58 runs off just 37 balls, smashing four boundaries and three sixes before eventually falling to Yuzvendra Chahal.

The innings also helped Kohli create more history. He now holds the record for the most runs scored against a single IPL opponent, with 1217 runs against Punjab Kings. Kohli additionally became the first batter in IPL history to register nine separate 500-plus run seasons, further cementing his legendary status in the tournament.
