Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his views on the heated exchange between Sanju Samson and Heinrich Klaasen during the IPL 2026 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk, saying the confrontation could have been avoided by both players.

The tense moment unfolded during the 15th over of SRH’s chase of 181. Klaasen, who was batting aggressively on 47 off just 25 deliveries, attempted a big slog against spinner Noor Ahmad but failed to make contact. Behind the stumps, Samson reacted quickly and completed a sharp stumping effort that reminded many fans of vintage MS Dhoni.
After removing the bails, Samson celebrated passionately and appeared to say something towards Klaasen. The decision was then referred to the third umpire, leading to a lengthy review and increasing tension on the field. Once the dismissal was confirmed, cameras captured Klaasen responding verbally, while Noor Ahmad stepped in to calm the situation as the exchange threatened to escalate.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin admitted the incident seemed unusual because neither Samson nor Klaasen are generally known for aggressive confrontations on the field.

“It could have been avoided. Sanju never celebrates like this. He did here and Klaasen also does not talk a lot. I have seen him. It was uncharacteristic of both. Maybe Sanju would have said something extra,” Ravichandran Ashwin said.

“Klaasen is a very calm person. He is calmer than Sanju. Maybe the heat of the moment got to it. I think this is all on the field and we must forget about it. It all keeps happening,” he added.
Despite the drama, SRH maintained control of the chase and secured a five-wicket victory with an over to spare, confirming their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs.
