Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) IPL 2026 campaign has turned from dominant to desperate within a matter of weeks. What once looked like one of the most complete teams in the tournament is now fighting to keep its playoff hopes alive heading into a must-win clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium. PBKS were comfortably among the frontrunners during the first half of the season, but a shocking six-match losing streak has pushed them into a difficult position.

Even a victory against LSG may not be enough, with Punjab also needing favourable results from the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals to sneak into the playoffs. Their recent struggles have largely come down to inconsistent bowling and sloppy fielding performances. Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala, Punjab conceded 222 despite conditions slightly favouring bowlers. Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson have failed to consistently deliver breakthroughs, while Yuzvendra Chahal’s season has fluctuated between brilliance and frustration.

Marco Jansen was even dropped after a series of underwhelming outings. There have still been a few positives for Punjab. Azmatullah Omarzai has emerged as a reliable performer, while Shashank Singh rediscovered form with an important half-century in the previous game. However, concerns continue to grow around captain Shreyas Iyer, who has managed only 118 runs during PBKS’ losing streak.

Punjab’s biggest strength remains their explosive top order. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have repeatedly provided aggressive starts, and when the trio of Arya, Prabhsimran, and Iyer clicks together, PBKS look extremely dangerous. Lucknow Super Giants, meanwhile, are playing for pride after another disappointing season. Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis have been outstanding with the bat, while Nicholas Pooran has slowly regained rhythm after a poor start to IPL 2026.

However, LSG’s middle-order collapses and inexperienced bowling attack have hurt them throughout the campaign. At Ekana Stadium, early assistance for pacers is expected once again, although recent high-scoring matches suggest batters could dominate if they survive the powerplay. Historically, Punjab Kings hold a slight 4-3 advantage over LSG, including a convincing win earlier this season.

Lucknow Super Giants are likely to remain without Aiden Markram for their final IPL 2026 league match against Punjab Kings, with the South African opener having returned home due to personal reasons. Mohammed Shami also missed the previous game, although there have been no injury concerns reported regarding the experienced pacer.

LSG could rely heavily on tactical match-ups against Punjab’s batting lineup. Left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan has historically troubled PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer in T20 cricket, conceding just 12 runs off 27 deliveries while dismissing him once. The battle could once again play a major role in the contest. Speedster Mayank Yadav is also expected to attack early against Prabhsimran Singh, whom he has dismissed twice previously in the format.

Probable XII: Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Abdul Samad, Ayush Badoni, Shahbaz Ahmed, Mohsin Khan, Mayank Yadav, Akash Singh, Prince Yadav, Digvesh Rathi

Punjab Kings, meanwhile, have no injury concerns ahead of the crucial clash. However, team selection could become interesting because of LSG’s left-handed middle order. Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant both enjoy strong records against Yuzvendra Chahal, who has struggled against left-handers in recent IPL seasons.

With Harpreet Brar also available as a left-arm spin option, PBKS may consider playing only one frontline spinner, potentially opening the door for Vijaykumar Vyshak’s return to the playing XI.

Probable XII: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Suryansh Shedge, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Azmatullah Omarzai, Harpreet Brar, Lockie Ferguson, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal/Vijaykumar Vyshak
