Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta believes the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans could be decided within the first six overs. According to Dasgupta, the battle between GT’s top-order batters and RCB’s experienced new-ball pair of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood will play a defining role in the high-pressure playoff encounter.
Speaking ahead of the blockbuster contest, Dasgupta pointed out how both teams depend heavily on strong starts, making the Powerplay phase extremely important. He recalled the previous meeting between the two sides, where Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill handled Hazlewood confidently, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar managed to strike early and build pressure during the opening overs.
Dasgupta feels the team that dominates the Powerplay is likely to control the momentum of the match. He also made a bold prediction, suggesting that the winner of Qualifier 1 could eventually lift the IPL 2026 trophy.

“The biggest battle will be Gujarat Titans’ top order against Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood with the new ball,” Deep Dasgupta said while speaking on JioHotstar. “Shubman Gill looked very comfortable against Hazlewood earlier, but Bhuvneshwar created pressure with crucial wickets. Those first six overs could decide the direction of the game.”
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans both finished the league stage with nine wins and 18 points from 14 matches. However, RCB secured the top position on the IPL 2026 points table because of a superior net run rate.
Despite finishing second, the Gujarat Titans enter the playoffs with stronger momentum after crushing the Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs in their final league game. In contrast, defending champions RCB suffered a disappointing 55-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad before the playoffs.
