Should India continue with Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain despite his dip in batting form? That question has resurfaced as reports suggest the team management is at least weighing his future, only months after he became just the third Indian captain to win a T20 World Cup title. Suryakumar’s inconsistent run in IPL 2026 has only added fuel to the discussion.

Even so, former India wicketkeeper-batter MSK Prasad feels the India T20I captain should remain in the leadership role, not just because of what he brings with the bat, but also for the sake of “leadership continuity.” MSK Prasad, who once served as chairman of selectors, believes India does not currently have a clear long-term replacement waiting to take over from Suryakumar. In his view, constant changes at the top can unsettle a side that needs stability more than panic-driven decisions.

“One of the biggest reasons to retain Suryakumar is leadership continuity,” MSK Prasad wrote in a column for Cricbuzz. “At present, India do not have a ready-made long-term T20 captaincy solution waiting in the wings. Changing captains frequently can disturb the direction and culture of the side. India needs stability, clarity, and a transition plan rather than sudden reactions based on temporary form.”

While backing Suryakumar to continue, Prasad also stressed the need to prepare India’s next generation of leaders in a structured way. He suggested that the selectors and team management should begin rotating vice-captains across series to gradually build a strong leadership pool.

“Personally, I feel the selectors and team management should now start grooming the next generation of T20 leaders under Suryakumar’s guidance,” he wrote. “Players like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan can be developed as future T20 captains for India. Over the next six months, these players can be made deputy leaders to Suryakumar Yadav in different series and conditions.”

Suryakumar’s batting form has indeed raised concerns. At the T20 World Cup, he managed 242 runs in nine innings, with 84 of those coming in India’s opening match against the USA. His IPL 2026 campaign was also below par, as he scored 270 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 147.54, while the Mumbai Indians failed to reach the playoffs.

His captaincy record, however, remains exceptional. Among Indian captains with at least 50 T20Is in charge, Suryakumar’s win percentage of 76.92 is second only to Rohit Sharma’s 79.03.

“India should avoid making emotional decisions based on short-term form,” MSK Prasad said. “The smarter move is to build continuity, groom future captains under his leadership, and strengthen India’s long-term T20 structure.”
