Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s successful IPL 2026 title defence was built on much more than individual brilliance, tactical planning, or match-winning performances. While stars like Virat Kohli, Josh Hazlewood, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar played crucial roles throughout the season, the real story behind RCB’s back-to-back championships appears to be the culture that has been carefully developed within the franchise.

That message came through loud and clear during head coach Andy Flower’s dressing-room speech after RCB defeated Gujarat Titans by five wickets in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Rather than focusing on statistics, records, or trophies, Flower chose to highlight the character, commitment, and leadership that helped Bengaluru become only the third team in IPL history to win consecutive titles.

One of the most powerful moments of the speech was directed at Virat Kohli. Flower described the former RCB captain as the “heartbeat” of the dressing room, underlining the impact he continues to have on the team beyond his performances with the bat.

“Virat, I know you get a lot of attention and quite rightly, but I don’t want to downplay that because you are a heartbeat in this dressing room,” Andy Flower said. Interestingly, the praise had little to do with Kohli’s unbeaten 75 in the final or his Player of the Match award. Instead, Flower focused on the example Kohli sets through his attitude, work ethic, and willingness to take responsibility under pressure.

“The courage that you continually show to go out there and put yourself on the line and take on high-quality opposition is a bloody great role model for all of us.” Those words perfectly capture why Kohli remains such an influential figure within the RCB setup. Even after nearly two decades in the IPL, he continues to set standards that younger players strive to follow.

Andy Flower also reserved special praise for experienced pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, who led RCB’s bowling attack throughout the season. “Bhuvi, you and Hoff, the way that you’ve led the bowling unit with skill and smarts and huge heart to do what you do, to bowl at the death, to bowl in the powerplay when excellent cricketers are coming to take you on. I respect you guys tremendously for it.”

The comments offered a fascinating insight into what makes this RCB side different from many talented teams that have fallen short in the past. Franchise cricket is filled with superstar players and big personalities. However, assembling a squad full of stars does not automatically guarantee success. Several teams have learned that lesson the hard way over the years. RCB’s management recognised that reality during the mega auction and squad-building process.

Rather than chasing only high-profile names, the franchise focused on creating balance, defining clear roles, and selecting players who fit the team environment. The result has been a dressing room built on trust, accountability, and mutual respect. Every player understands their role, while senior figures lead from the front both on and off the field. These qualities rarely appear on scorecards or highlight packages, but they often separate champions from contenders.

Andy Flower’s speech served as a reminder that RCB’s success is not just about runs, wickets, or trophies. It is about creating a culture where players thrive, leaders inspire, and everyone works towards the same goal. That culture helped deliver a second consecutive IPL title in 2026. More importantly, it could become the foundation for sustained success in the years ahead.
