Shreyas Iyer has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner to become India’s next full-time T20I captain, with chief selector Ajit Agarkar believed to have identified the Mumbai batter as a long-term leadership option for the shortest format. According to a report in the *Times of India*, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now keen to ensure that head coach Gautam Gambhir aligns with that vision as discussions around India’s future white-ball leadership continue.

The report suggests that current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is facing increasing scrutiny due to concerns surrounding his recent batting form. While there have also been reports regarding a wrist injury, Suryakumar has publicly denied any fitness issues and has previously spoken about his ambition to represent India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

However, the selectors appear to be planning for the future. Agarkar is reportedly working on a succession roadmap for both white-ball formats, with Iyer playing a central role in those plans. The right-handed batter has already been elevated to vice-captaincy duties in ODIs, a move that many now view as a significant indicator of the selectors’ long-term thinking.

The report further claims that Iyer is being considered as India’s preferred No. 4 batter in T20Is, potentially reshaping the middle order and strengthening his case as a leadership candidate. While Agarkar and Gambhir are understood to share the broader goal of building a successful team, there have reportedly been differences in opinion on certain selection matters, including team balance and the use of specialists across formats.

A senior source quoted in the report described Agarkar as one of the strongest chief selectors India has had in recent years, highlighting his willingness to make difficult decisions with an eye on the future.

Iyer’s leadership credentials also strengthen his case. He has already captained an IPL-winning side and led another franchise to an IPL final, making him one of the most accomplished active captains in Indian cricket.
