India’s search for a new T20I captain is gathering pace, and reports suggest head coach Gautam Gambhir has a clear preference for the role. According to PTI, Gambhir is keen on seeing Sanju Samson lead the national side in the shortest format. However, the BCCI selection committee reportedly remains unconvinced about both Samson and Ishan Kishan, citing concerns over their ability to deliver consistent performances over an extended period.

With those reservations in mind, the race for India’s T20I captaincy appears to have narrowed down to two leading contenders — Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma. While Shreyas is widely viewed as the frontrunner, reports indicate that Gambhir has some reservations about his appointment despite their successful partnership at Kolkata Knight Riders during the IPL 2024 title-winning campaign.

At the time, there were discussions in cricket circles that Shreyas felt his leadership contribution did not receive enough recognition due to Gambhir’s influential presence as team mentor.

The captaincy vacancy has emerged following reports that the BCCI is preparing to move on from current skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Although Suryakumar guided India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, a prolonged decline in batting form has reportedly raised questions about his place in the playing XI, prompting the board to consider a leadership change.

Among the candidates, Shreyas boasts the strongest leadership résumé. In recent years, he has captained Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title and guided Punjab Kings to a runner-up finish, while also evolving his batting approach to suit modern T20 cricket. Reports further suggest that chief selector Ajit Agarkar has long viewed Shreyas as a future white-ball captain.

Tilak Varma, meanwhile, represents the long-term option. The 23-year-old impressed during the T20 World Cup and is set to captain India A in the upcoming tri-series involving Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. That assignment could prove crucial in determining whether he is ready to lead India at the highest level.
