Ollie Robinson could hardly have scripted a better comeback. After spending more than two years away from international cricket, the England fast bowler produced a sensational spell on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, reminding everyone why he was once considered one of the most complete seamers in world cricket. Making his first Test appearance in over 800 days, Robinson ripped through New Zealand’s top order with a devastating burst that left the visitors stunned.

The Sussex seamer finished the day with outstanding figures of 4 for 10 from six overs, playing a pivotal role in reducing New Zealand to 61/6 at stumps after England had been bowled out for 140 earlier in the day. The highlight of Robinson’s remarkable return came in his very first over. After trapping opener Devon Conway lbw with a delivery that jagged back sharply, he dismissed New Zealand batting superstar Kane Williamson two balls later.
Williamson was undone by movement off the seam and could only edge the ball to short leg. Robinson then completed a dream sequence by removing Rachin Ravindra on the very next delivery, leaving New Zealand reeling and Lord’s erupting in celebration. The 32-year-old later added the wicket of Daryl Mitchell, whose attempted leave proved costly as the ball nipped back to crash into the stumps. It was a spell that showcased everything Robinson does best — accuracy, patience, movement, and relentless pressure.

Reflecting on his unforgettable day, Ollie Robinson admitted he was struggling to put the emotions into words. “I’m so speechless about how it’s gone — I couldn’t have dreamt up that day. When we lost the toss and got stuck in, we were hoping to be batting all day. It obviously didn’t go our way, but to come out with the ball as a collective, we were right on it from ball one. It’s been such a special day. I have no words,” Robinson told BBC Test Match Special.
His return to the England setup follows a challenging period in his career. After England’s disappointing Ashes campaign and a subsequent squad overhaul, Robinson found himself on the outside looking in. Concerns surrounding his fitness levels and off-field issues ultimately led to his omission despite an impressive Test record.

At the time he was dropped in 2024, Robinson had already taken 76 wickets in just 20 Test matches at a remarkable average of 22.92. However, England’s management wanted more consistency in fitness and preparation, forcing the pacer to rebuild his game away from the international spotlight. Robinson revealed that missing out on major assignments initially hurt, but the break ultimately helped him rediscover his love for cricket.
“I was nowhere near ready to play or anywhere near where I am now as a person and a cricketer,” Ollie Robinson said while discussing his absence from the England side. “It’s only been the last few months that I’ve got the enjoyment back for the game and knuckled down a bit more. I went to Australia in the winter and played some grade cricket and just got the love of the game back really.”

The right-arm seamer credited months of hard work for earning another opportunity at the highest level. A strong County Championship campaign with Sussex, where he has also taken on leadership responsibilities as captain, played a major role in convincing selectors that he was ready for a return.

“When I got the call from Rob Key and the text from Brendon McCullum, I knew that I had a lot of hard work to put in. That’s what I’ve tried to do over the last few months,” he explained. Ollie Robinson also revealed the advice he received from England captain Ben Stokes before the series. “Stokesy said to me last week, ‘Great to have you back, but just know the hard work’s still to be done.’ That’s what’s constantly in my head at the moment.”
Earlier in the day, England struggled with the bat after being inserted by New Zealand. Kyle Jamieson starred with the ball, claiming 5 for 62 as the hosts were dismissed for just 140. Harry Brook was the lone bright spot, producing a counter-attacking 56 off 71 deliveries to help England reach a competitive score on a lively Lord’s surface.
However, Robinson’s stunning spell, supported by wickets from Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, completely shifted the momentum. By stumps, England had seized control of the contest despite a day shortened by poor light and weather interruptions. For Robinson, it was more than just four wickets. It was validation of the sacrifices, hard work, and determination that brought him back to the England Test side. If Day 1 at Lord’s is any indication, England may have rediscovered the attack leader they have been searching for.
